Curating Industrial Revolution

Our exhibit focused mainly on how transportation greatly affected the industrial revolution as well as the things that fueled those forms of transportation. The first source was the comparison between William Wordsworth's views and Samuel Smiles views on the upcoming manufacturing of the railways. William did not approve of the railways. He thought that they were going to bring down nature and ruin it and that there was no inch of England that could be saved from the railways. We accompanied his quote with a picture of a mill that caught on fire showing of the downside to industrial revolution. Then for Samuel Smiles he had a much different perspective. He talked of how the railway would cut down England to a sixth of its size. Samuel also talked of how the country and town would be closer together providing many good things like punctuality and shipping goods. We accompanied his quote with a majestic picture of a train in the station blowing out cloud like steam making it look heavenly. The next source was Robert Foulton's letter of his voyage on a steamship. The overview of his writing was mostly about how great steamships were and how greatly they will improve life. The next source is a diagram of a steamship showing how it works. Below you will see the diagram.

The other source was a timeline of transportation starting in 1790 and went to 1850. It showed the development of canals and railways throughout that time period. It showed the main advancements in transportation and how they progressed through time. The next source we had was a photograph called Cutting at Blisworth on the London-Birmingham Line. It showed how trains much like in the picture could go right through mountains unlike other forms of transportation where you would have to go over or around the mountains. With railways everything is much more attainable and easy to reach. The final source we had was a Map of Coal and Metal Production as well containing major wool production areas and canals and rivers that were navigable. The diagram below shows the areas where coal, metal goods and woolen cloth were produced. You can also see the canals that were built and the rivers.

We came up with the title Fueling Transportation in the Industrial Revolution.  Our poster mainly focused on transportation and how that helped people in this time as well as the more availability and improvements in fuel that powers the vehicles. I hope that when someone looks at our poster they learn how greatly transportation was improved and how much it affected people in the Industrial Revolution. Transportation brought people closer together so knowledge could be passed between people with ease. People could now get perishable goods that without fast transportation would have gone bad. People starting living more inland since now you don't need to live on a coast to get your trade and sea life.

All the other posters helped me better understand the Industrial Revolution. The first poster was A New Age Looming Over the Horizon.  It talked about the spinning jenny. One of the most famous machines that came out of the Industrial Revolution. It mainly focused on how efficient sewing garments and cloth became after all these improvements in machinery. Out of this people could make their own clothes in their homes with the help of the hand loom. The next poster focused on weaving. It was called Weaving Slavery Into the Industrial Revolution.  It was mainly about how with the slave population increased once there was a need for more cotton. They needed more cotton because they could make clothes faster and they needed more workers to pick cotton. So that as said before caused a spike in slave population. The next poster was called Unlawful Conditions, Dangerous Workspaces and Mistreated Children.  This poster focused on how dangerous the conditions were in the mills for the children. Children worked without shoes, in mines, and at extremely low ages for extremely low wages. The final poster was about changes in life due to the Industrial Revolution. It as called Changes to Life Conditions Due To The Industrial Revolution It showed the wages over the years and how much it costed to live. During this time it seemed very bad to live. All of the posters have one thing in common. They all touch upon the pros and cons of the Industrial Revolution and how they effected people.
